Incident affecting Google Cloud Bigtable

Cloud Bigtable is experiencing issues with CopyBackup, RestoreTable, and CreateCluster operations with some zones as the target zone.

Incident began at 2023-10-24 19:00 and ended at 2023-10-25 09:59 (all times are US/Pacific).

The issue with Google Cloud Bigtable CopyBackup, RestoreTable, and CreateCluster operations has been resolved for all affected users as of Wednesday, 2023-10-25 09:59 US/Pacific.

Upon further investigation, our engineering team concluded that the issue affected limited number of customers and the issue started on 2023-10-24 19:00 US/Pacific.

We thank you for your patience while we worked on resolving the issue.

Summary: Cloud Bigtable is experiencing issues with CopyBackup, RestoreTable, and CreateCluster operations with some zones as the target zone.

Description: We are experiencing an issue with Cloud Bigtable CopyBackup, RestoreTable, and CreateCluster operations using some zones as the target zones beginning at Monday, 2023-10-23.

Our engineering team is working to investigate the issue.

We will provide an update by Wednesday, 2023-10-25 12:30 US/Pacific with current details.

We apologize to all who are affected by the disruption.

Diagnosis:

  • Cloud Bigtable CopyBackup may fail when copying to a cluster in the affected zones,
  • RestoreTable may fail when restoring to an instance with cluster in the affected zones, and
  • CreateCluster operations may fail.

Following are the AFFECTED ZONES asia-east1-b, asia-east2-c, us-central1-c, and us-west2-a

Workaround: The following workarounds are available:

CreateCluster:

  • Create the cluster in an unaffected zone

CopyBackup:

  • Create a new cluster or select an existing cluster in an unaffected zone
  • Copy the backup to the above cluster

RestoreTable:

  • Create a new instance or select an existing instance in an unaffected zone
  • Restore the backup to the above instance
